Developing Better Therapies for Life Threatening Cardiac Arrythmias by Studying Brain-Heart Interactions

Stress and negative mental states are major risk factors for chronic heart disease. Increased signaling of the brain to the injured heart is a major cause for deadly arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death.

Center investigators under the leadership of Dr. Shivkumar are studying the mechanisms underlying impairments of the brain-heart axis in order to develop more effective mechanisms to treat and prevent serious cardiac arrhythmias.
